SUV’s in general have a bad reputation for using too much gas, having a really low mileage and emitting too much green-house gases. In the last few years all this has changed. SUV’s currently on the market have gotten more eco-friendly and are now capable of achieving over 30 miles per gallon. 1. Ford Escape Hybrid

Due to its high efficiency, capability, versatility, and reasonable price, the Ford Escape Hybrid ranks number one on our list. Ford Escape, the first hybrid SUV on the market, averages 34 miles per gallon on city streets and 30 miles per gallon on the highway. The SUV features a 2.3 liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that is coupled with an electric motor. With 155 horsepower, the Hybrid version of the Escape is faster than the regular gasoline powered version. The Escape Hybrid features a stylish exterior and a roomy interior. 2. Lexus RX400h

The Lexus RX400h is the only true luxury hybrid SUV available on today’s market. The non-hybrid version achieves 18/23 miles per gallon. The Hybrid manages to get 27 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. It offers a roomy interior and it is well equipped. 3. Saturn Vue

In 2008, General Motors completely redesigned the Saturn Vue. The new model is quite attractive so it caught our attention. While most of the hybrid SUV’s have a better mileage in the city, the opposite is true for the Vue Hybrid. This SUV is able to achieve 25 miles per gallon in the city and an amazing 32 mpg on the highway. With the price of $25,000, the Saturn Vue Hybrid is the cheapest hybrid SUV on the market.

4. Toyota Highlander Hybrid

This year, the Japanese automaker redesigned its Highlander Hybrid. The vehicle now offers a roomier interior and a more attractive exterior. The hybrid also offers a great amount of safety features and a bunch of entertainment, such as the stereo with MP3 capabilities. The SUV averages 27 mpg on city streets and 25 mpg on the interstate. Although the new model is heavier than the previous version, it manages to get the same mileage. This is a great achievement. 5. Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid

The Chevy Tahoe captures the fifth position on our list. Although not the “greenest”, the Tahoe Hybrid received the title of “Green Car of the Year" at the LA Auto Show. The Tahoe offers a six-liter V8 gasoline engine that boasts a whopping 332 hp and a 60-kilowatt electric motor that helps in achieving a high mileage.
