Sanyo to Supply Car Batteries?
Sanyo, the Japanese electronics giant and the world’s largest rechargeable battery maker, announced on Friday the company is in talks with six major automakers in the United States, Europe and Japan the supply of auto-use batteries.
“We are talking with more than five or six car makers on the co-development and supply of auto-use batteries," Masato Ito, Sanyo Electric’s senior vice president told Reuters in an interview.
For Sanyo and other rechargeable battery manufacturers automotive batteries are expected to be a market with huge growth potential as higher oil prices and growing concerns over climate change prompt car makers to expedite a shift to battery-driven vehicles.
Sanyo is already working with Volkswagen AG in developing lithium-ion batteries as the race to the next generation of hybrid cars speeds up. Since current hybrid cars are powered by nickel batteries, battery manufacturers invest a vast amount of money in the development of lithium-ion batteries. Li-ion batteries are capable of holding more power than current batteries.
Besides working with Volkswagen AG, Sanyo supplies nickel-metal hydride batteries to Honda Motor Co Ltd, one of leading hybrid car manufacturers.
