Toyota boss Akio Toyoda recently announced that his engineers are making serious progress towards building the company’s first hydrogen powered car. The said the first hydrogen powered Toyota will have its market debut by year 2015. Currently, the only manufacturer to offer a hydrogen powered car is BMW with its 7 Series.

Apart from the hydrogen Toyota model, Akio Toyoda also said the Toyota iQ will be available as an electric vehicle by year 2012. By the same year, the company will also make available a Plug-in Hybrid version of the Toyota Prius.

The future Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid and the Toyota iQ electric will use Ni-mh batteries, rather than the currently widely spread Li-Ion ones. The Japanese company has to make this change because the current demand for Li-Ion batteries exceeds its production capacity.
